New Story: Black Father and Son Start Medical Chiropractic Office

Ever visit a Medical Chiropractic Office owned and operated by a father and son? Meet Doctor Gbolahan Olajide, and Adedeji Olajide, chiropractor and business manager of Pacific Chiropractic Healthcare Inc., located in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Doctor Gbolahan Olajide was born in Lagos, Nigeria and left his homeland by taking a risk to move to Illinois in 1972 to pursue an educational dream.

Leaving Nigeria was not an easy task as he experienced extraordinary challenges arriving in the states. Although he entered into the land of dreams, he was surprised to meet devastating challenges which he had to overcome. Leaving Nigeria was not an easy task as he experienced extraordinary challenges arriving in the states. Although he entered into the land of dreams, he was surprised to meet some devastating challenges which he had to overcome. During the first day of classes of post-graduate work at the University of South Carolina, he met a big challenge when his Biology professor told him:

"What are you doing here? This is a place to train future Medical Doctors. Black kids do not take my class, you should take sociology instead.”

Rather than using these comments as an excuse to give up, he used them as fuel to keep pursuing his dream and in 1989 he finished his chiropractic education from Cleveland Chiropractic, earning his certificate as a licensed Medical Chiropractic doctor in the state of California.

A family business model is common, consider Chik-fil-A for example, a multi-billion-dollar company owned by the Cathy family. But rarely do you see a father and son operating a medical practice, not to mention a pair of black men. According to the 2013 U.S Bureau of Justice Statistics, 37% of black men are incarcerated, which means 1 out of every 3 black males in this country is not working.

In addition to general labor challenges facing black men, there is an extreme shortage of black doctors. The United States Census Bureau shows blacks make up just under 4 percent of practicing doctors in the U.S, (which is the lowest of all racial groups).

Many of these stats occur for various reasons. In an article done by Teran Powell of Milwaukee's NPR, Ms.Powell explains how the number of African American men pursuing careers as physicians hasn't increased since the late 1970's.

Of the many reasons, the article reports that the lack of black doctors in the U.S. is due to young black men not imaging themselves as future medical professionals. In the article, she gathers insight from other doctors in the field, of those Dr. Kevin Izard shares his opinion by stating:

"Black men see themselves as basketball players. They see themselves as football players. They don't see themselves being doctors." - Dr. Kevin Izard

Dr. Olajide has always had the dream of being an inspiration to the younger generation. In the mid-'80s, Dr. Gbohalan Olajide and his beautiful wife Winifred Olajide moved to Los Angeles and gave birth to two of their seven children Adesola (28) and Adedeji (25).

Adedeji grew up seeing his father make an impact on the community through medicine, and after graduating with his master's of divinity degree from Azusa Pacific University his passion grew to want to impact his community.

Adedeji is a big dreamer and in April 2018, God gave him the vision to start a Medical Chiropractic Office with his dad. Initially, his dad dismissed the idea, but after extended conversations, collaboration and opportunities the vision started to manifest. When asked about the rejection of the offer, Adedeji shared:

"I live by this quote, "If people aren’t laughing at your dreams…then they aren’t big enough!” - (Grayson Marshall)

I believed so strongly that this project would happen and when we opened our office, it was almost as if I had seen it before in a dream."

On August 1st, 2019 Adedeji and his dad Dr. Olajide opened PACIFIC CHIROPRACTIC HEALTHCARE INC., a fully operational Medical Chiropractic Office in the well-known city of Rancho Cucamonga. The office serves clients from Los Angeles, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties in addition to other neighboring communities.

Dr. Olajide and Adedeji plan to be an inspiration for black men in this country that you can reach great heights and accomplish big dreams through hard work, consistency and honoring your values. They plan to continue serving the community with a spirit of excellence to make an impact in their community by providing a quality service. Dr. Olajide always says,

“The next best thing to knowing something is knowing where to find it.”
