3 Things Athletes Can Do when Trying To Get Signed (2 min read) by Deji Olajide

Here are 3 things athletes can do when trying to get signed. Print this out and use it as a guide.

1) Set yourself a definite goal - Some student-athletes have more of a wish to play in college and not an actual goal. A wish is a fairy tale without any action, a goal can be measured with clear expectations (use the image of the S.M.A.R.T goal template below as a guide). It is critical to have a clear goal and preferably a visual image to motivate you of the college you desire to attend. Creating a vision board is another great way to actively increase your dream and help manifest your desires.

2) Imagine yourself as a successful person - It is important to remain positive about your journey and to be your own biggest fan! If you do not believe in yourself, then why should someone else?

As a High School athlete I was told I could not play in college because I was too small (5’8 170). Instead of allowing negative self-talk to keep me stuck, I began to think about all the people who went before me that made it to college with a similar frame and build. I looked up to professional players like Tavon Austin, Dwayne Frampton, and Wes Welker as visual examples that I can be successful too. Use other success stories as motivation to fuel your imagination that you too will succeed!

3) Write a description of who you will become when you are a signed athlete - Choose some characteristics and traits that your future self will uphold. Think of these as affirmations to motivate yourself.

Some examples include: (You can write these on your mirror, or on your door)

  • I am a leader

  • I am filled with energy and finish everything on time

  • I can do all things through God who strengthens me

  • I choose to think positive about myself and my future

  • Everything I need to be successful is already inside of me

  • Colleges desire to meet and talk with me

  • I have passing grades and finish assignments with excellence

“A human being always acts and feels and performs in accordance with what he imagines to be true about himself and his environment...For imagination sets the goal ‘picture’ which our automatic mechanism works on. We act, or fail to act, not because of ‘will,’ as is so commonly believed, but because of imagination.”
